Collaborative Research Center, Rockefeller University

Completed 2012

Manhattan, New York

The Collaborative Research Center, a project envisioned by Rockefeller University to encourage interdisciplinary research and intellectual exchange, was designed by Mitchell Giurgola Architects, with the support of Melida Marte, Principal at M Marte Studio. The project involved renovating two existing laboratory buildings, each spanning 100,000 square feet, and adding a new 60,000 square foot connector building. This connector bridges the two structures and significantly enhances the landscaped areas in the northern half of the campus. The transformation has revitalized the north half of the campus, restoring it to its intended purpose as a vibrant hub for scientific research.

A commitment to sustainability is evident throughout the CRC. The choice to renovate rather than replace the existing buildings, along with the incorporation of outdoor gardens functioning as intensive green roofs, high-performance glazing, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and highly efficient mechanical and heat recovery systems, contributed to the project's achievement of a Silver LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.
