New Physics Department, New York University

Completed 2017

Manhattan, New York

Melida Marte, Principal of M Marte Studio, provided architectural support and assisted Mitchell Giurgola with lab design for the new flagship location of NYU's internationally recognized Physics Department. The project involved a complete gut renovation of 95,000 square feet across the top three floors of 726 Broadway, a former manufacturing building. Mitchell Giurgola led the design, while the project team added a significant mechanical plant to the roof, enabling the future conversion of additional floors into chemistry and biology labs.

The design emphasized creating distinctive neighborhoods for the department's four primary research Centers, encouraging interaction among researchers. The new facilities feature large shared labs, including an Optical Lab, Chemical Synthesis Lab, Measurement Lab, Low-Temperature Lab, Fabrication Lab (clean room), Electronics/Laser Lab, and Biophysics Lab, all designed to support collaborative research.
